CityU VMC Vet Tips Friday! | Pet Care Series – Top 5 Puppy Caring Tips (2)

Let’s talk about some more puppy caring tips today.

3. Training
Training is crucial to make the lives of both the pet and the owner easier. It is most beneficial the earlier that it is started.

Toilet training
You can neither make a puppy wear diapers nor make it do the business at your discretion. Toilet training starts when you assign a particular place where it should do it every time. Use positive reinforcement and refrain from punishing. It is also important to know when your puppy needs to pee or poo, usually:
• After eating
• After drinking
• Before bedtime
• When waking up from a nap
• During physical activities
• After physical activities

Leash training
Start putting a collar on your puppy early and allow it to drag the leash in your home. When it has got used to and feels comfortable with the collar and leash, go to its favorite places in your home with a smaller leash. When you are confident, you can start to go out with the shorter leash, ensuring you keep your puppy by your side at all times, but remember your puppy must be fully vaccinated before heading out on a walk!

4. Vaccination
You are required to have your puppy vaccinated against rabies, and the other shots are strongly recommended as they will keep your furry friend away from certain serious diseases. When you get your puppy, you should obtain their vaccination information from the previous owner. Then head to the vet at once for a check-up and schedule any vaccinations that are still required and as well as any future routine check-ups.

5. Over to you
You must keep an eye for any signs of illnesses in your pet and bring them to the vet immediately if you see any. Try to spend quality time with them and reward all positive behaviours, as this will also help to develop the human-animal bond and provide enjoyment to the relationship.
