【VMC Vets Tips | Cancer in Pets : Warning signs and Treatment】

Neoplasia is the leading cause of death in pets especially for our geriatric animals. As pet-parents, it is important for us to recognize early signs, as early medical intervention does make a big difference in clinical outcome. We are going to discuss a few warning signs that may associate with neoplasia. Some of the cancer treatments will also be discussed here.

1. Abnormal swelling that persists or continues to grow

Don’t be shy to give your furry friend a pat every now and then. This is the best way to find lumps, bumps, or swelling that could be found anywhere on the body.

2. Wound that does not heal as expected

Non-healing wound can be a sign of infection or neoplasia. Please consult your veterinarian if you spot any wound that is not recovering over time.

3. Weight loss and loss of appetite without an identified underlying cause

If your pet is not on a diet and weight loss or inappetence is noted, it may be an indication of potential illness.

4. Offensive odors

Offensive odors from your pet’s mouth, ears, or any other part of your pet’s body, should bring your attention to see a veterinarian. Foul odors are commonly seen in patients with tumors in the mouth, nose, ears, or anus.

5. Persistent lameness

Limping or other evidence of pain is not only associated with injury but also with neoplasia involving bone or soft tissue of the joints.

6. Difficulty breathing, urinating, or defecating

Treatment Options

Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy are used alone or in combination as part of the treatment. Surgery may be conducted if the tumor can be resected. When cancer cells are spread to other parts of the body or surgical removal is not possible, chemotherapy may be indicated. Radiation therapy is another treatment options for certain types of neoplasia.

These problems are likely caused by an underlying health issue. Please do schedule a veterinary appointment as soon as possible if your pet displays any of these symptoms. Early detection and treatment are important for them.
