【VMC Vets Tips | Thyroid disease in pets: Symptoms and Treatment】

When your pet is affected by the malfunctioned thyroid gland, clinical signs could varies depending on the disease process. Symptoms in dogs and cats may be subtle in the beginning, and could become more severe over time. Here are some common symptoms for pet-parents to be aware of.

Symptoms of underactive thyroid ( Hypothyroidism)

Low thyroid levels affects the function of all the organ systems of your dog. , and the symptoms can vary greatly from dog to dog. The clinical signs are usually related to a slowdown of the metabolism. Common signs include:

• Weight gain, cold intolerance, lethargy, or weakness
• Skin changes such as dullness, hair loss (usually in over the trunk or areas of post- clipping) or thinning, skin thickening or darkening
• Poor-quality hair coat
• Slow hair regrowth
• Some dogs will also experience anemia (low red blood cells) or high cholesterol levels

Symptoms of overactive thyroid ( Hyperthyroidism)

In hyperthyroidism, your cat’s metabolic rate is accelerated due to an over-producing thyroid gland. Common clinical signs are as follows.

• Weight loss despite an increased, sometimes insatiable appetite
• Increased thirst
• Increased urination (sometimes in inappropriate places like outside of the litter box)
• Vomiting, diarrhea
• Restlessness/hyperactivity
• Aggressive behavior, Unkempty hair coat, greasy or matted hair

Treatment

- Hypothyroidism:

A prescription for thyroxine, a replacement hormone compound, to offset your dog’s low thyroid function. This disease is treatable but not curable.

- Hyperthyroidism:

There are a few different treatment options available for cats diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, such as anti-thyroid drugs, radioactive iodine therapy, removing the cat’s thyroid by surgery, and diet with reduced iodine content, etc. Your veterinarian can help you choose the treatment that is best for your cat.
