⚠️𝗗𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗦 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 ⚠️

CityU VMC has seen a sharp increase in heatstroke cases this week. Heat stroke happens quickly and is often fatal. Please use extreme caution and keep your pets safe during this hot weather.

• AVOID strenuous outdoor activities when the temperature exceeds 29°C.
• Ensure animals have access to shade and fresh drinking water at all times.
• NEVER leave a dog unattended in a hot car. The temperature inside a parked car rises dangerously within minutes, even if the windows are partially open.
• Be mindful of hot surfaces like pavement, which can cause burns to paw pads.

The following animals have an increased risk of heat stroke. Caretakers of these pets should use extreme caution when the temperature exceeds 26°C:

• Less than 6 months old, or older than 7 years
• Flat-faced dogs (e.g. French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Pugs, Pekingese)
• Large-breed dogs (e.g. Labradors, German Shepherds)
• Thick-coated breeds (e.g. Huskies, Bernese Mountain Dogs)
• Overweight pets

If you suspect your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, follow the following steps:

• IMMEDIATELY remove the pet from the hot environment
• IMMEDIATELY seek veterinary care. Heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency.
• If available, wet the fur with room temperature water.
• DO NOT cover the pet with towels
• DO NOT use ice to cool the pet
• DO NOT force the pet to drink water

Heat stroke is a preventable tragedy. Should your pet need emergency care for any reason, give us a call at 3650-3000 – our emergency service is ready to help 24/7.
