CityU VMC Vet Tips Friday! | Pet Care Series – Top 5 Kitten Caring Tips (2)

Do your kittens fit in perfectly at their new home? Have you mastered the essential kitten caring skills? Let’s continue learning today!

3. Training:
Cats are not keen on being trained for tricks. On the contrary, they love their owners to perform tricks, make their bed, give them food as well as rub and cuddle them on their demand. When they are not in the mood, they will leave you for some quality time alone.
However, you still need to train the kittens for doing business in the litter box. Cats tend to hide their stools or urine so make sure you have prepared a litter box with cat litter inside ( eg. Sand, paper litters or tofu litters). Introduce them to the litter tray by placing kittens into the box after meals, and place them in an easily accessible location. They also prefer doing their business in a quiet place with less noise and less traffic, avoid placing the litter tray next to machinery such as washing machines or vacuum cleaners.

4. Vaccination
Take your kittens to the vet within their first week of arrival for a body check. He/she will let you know their vaccination needs and give you the schedule for shots. Booster vaccines can protect the kittens from infectious diseases. You can also consult your vet for regular deworming products, parasites control preventatives, basic caring tips and kitten food options.

5. Other things to consider:
• Cats love scratching mainly to sharpen their claws and mark territories to help keep them in the hunting game ( if they were still living in the wild! ). You can trim their nails once every two to three weeks depending on their growth rate. This could help prevent unwanted scratches on your furniture or accidental sharp scratches on ourselves.
• Don’t allow kittens to bite your fingers often as this will lead to negative behaviour and it will become increasingly painful along with their growth.
• Keep a constant eye on signs like anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea and sneezing. Rush to the vet if you find any of these to protect the kittens from dire circumstances.
