【VMC Vets Tips| Kidney disease in pets – treatment & how to prevent】

Kidney problems in dogs can be acute or chronic, and their treatment is different. Acute kidney failure is often related to infections or toxins, where kidney function can deteriorate within hours. For chronic kidney issues, it is an irreversible long-term condition that progresses gradually over time. Therefore, you need to act fast in case of acute kidney failure, while watching out for any sign of chronic kidney disease, especially for geriatric dogs.

How to treat acute kidney failure?

- IV Fluids: the initial treatment for acute kidney failure is the administration of intravenous (IV) fluid to rehydrate the patient and flush out any toxins that should have been removed by the kidneys if the kidney function was normal. The veterinarian will then monitor the urine production, repeat the renal profile in order to assess the kidney function.

- Medications: Antibiotics may be given if the cause of the kidney failure is known, or infection is suspected to be the cause. Some other medications such as antiemetics, pain relief, gastric protectants may be required depending on the dog’s health status.

- Feeding Tube Placement: pets with kidney failure often do not feel well enough to eat. A feeding tube is placed to allow feeding directly into the stomach.

How to treat chronic kidney failure?

While there is no cure for chronic kidney failure, symptoms can be minimized through early medical intervention in order to slow down the progression of the disease.

- Diet: Depending on the stage of kidney disease, a diet that is low in protein, phosphorus, calcium, and sodium but high in omega 3 fatty acids is recommended. Keeping your dog well hydrated is crucial. You can put extra water bowls in different locations at home to promote water intake.

- Medication & Supplement: A number of medications is available to treat different stages of kidney disease, so it is best to consult your veterinarian to formulate a treatment plan. Please check with your veterinarian on what kind of supplements can be used on your pet.

How to prevent kidney disease?

- A nutritionally balanced diet is essential. Your veterinarian will be able to guide you when it comes to your dog’s dietary needs.
- Watch out for chemicals and toxins at home — consuming toxic substances often trigger acute kidney failure.
- Kidney failure can happen to dogs as they age. Avoid any snack or diet that is high in salt and protein levels. This may put a strain on the kidneys.
- Regular checkup with your veterinarian helps to detect any signs of kidney failure so that the problem can be addressed early.
