【VMC Vet Tips | September is Animal Pain Awareness Month!】

Pain commonly affects pets and can be acute or chronic. Acute pain begins suddenly in response to a real or potential injury, such as a broken bone, a surgical incision, or a burn. Chronic pain persists beyond the normal healing phase of an injury, and is a complex, abnormal medical condition. Chronic pain is especially common in older pets, as well as pets with previous untreated acute pain.

Common causes of pain in animals include injuries, infections, degenerative joint disease (arthritis), dental disease, and cancer. Surgeries and other medical procedures can cause pain in pets. CityU VMC’s anaesthesia specialists use the most modern techniques available to prevent and treat pain, ensuring your pets remain comfortable throughout their treatment.

Animals are experts at concealing signs of pain, and they may express their discomfort in ways that are not obvious to their human family members. Common signs of pain in pets may include the following:

• Decreased activity level
• Stiffness, difficulty standing up or lying down
• Decreased appetite or dropping food while eating
• Over-grooming, licking, biting, or chewing a particular area of the body
• Changes in urination or defecation habits
• Limping, dragging or scuffing the feet
• when touched or picked up

If you suspect your pet may be showing signs of pain, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to discuss options for monitoring and treatment. New treatments and tools are available that can significantly improve your pet’s quality of life.
