CityU VMC Vet Tips Friday! | Pet-Friendly Fruits (2)

Let’s continue our discussion on pet-friendly fruits today!

1. Cantaloupe: Cantaloupe is very high in nutrients as a good source of fiber and water. With high sugar content, it should only be given once or twice a week and be avoided by diabetic pets and dogs that are overweight.

2. Watermelon: Watermelon has more than 90% water content, which will keep your pet hydrated during the summer. It also contains vitamins and potassium. Make sure you don’t offer the rind and seeds which may lead to intestinal blockage.

3. Strawberry: Strawberry contains vitamin C and it is also a good fiber source. It possesses an enzyme good for dental health. Due to its high sugar content, it should not be consumed on a regular basis.

4. Mango: Mangoes provide rich vitamins and carotenes. It has a high sugar content so like other sweet fruits, it can be used as a treat during summertime. Don’t offer the whole mango but peel and remove the hard pit.

5. Orange: Oranges are not toxic to dogs but some dogs don’t like its citrus taste and smell. If your dog likes it, offer only the fleshy inner part without seeds. They are high in sugar and can potentially cause an upset stomach if too much is fed. Oranges should not be fed to cats.

All the above fruits are completely safe if used as instructed but it is always important to check with your veterinarian first before adding new food to your pet’s diet. Some fruits are not healthy for dogs and cats with certain medical conditions. Some fruits and vegetables are highly toxic to pets. While grapes and raisins are at the top of the list, avocados, nuts, unripe tomatoes, onion and ginger are also contraindicated.
