CityU VMC Vet Tips Friday! | Canine Reproduction Series – 4 Tips for taking care of female dogs in heat

Female dogs only come into heat two times a year, therefore for breeding dogs, each time can be a precious opportunity to help them get pregnant. We have come up with the following tips for you to take care of your dog in heat.

1. Food
Dogs often lose appetite due to stress and anxiety during the heat period. To fulfil their nutritious requirements, you may offer her special treats or diets tailored for female dogs in the reproduction phase. These tend to have a better balance of protein, carbohydrate, vitamins and other nutrients suited for their needs.

2. Grooming
Female dogs discharge blood from their vulva during the heat period, which contains pheromones to attract males. Her hindquarters will get dirty, and this can be cleaned off with water. Alternatively, diapers for dogs can be worn, but they should be changed regularly for hygiene purposes.

3. Pyometra
It is the infection of the womb. It happens when there is a formation of pus inside the womb which may or may not come with discharge from the vulva. Pyometra can be life-threatening so if there is any concern, you should make an appointment with your vet immediately. Depending on the case, some infections can resolve with a course of antibiotics, but even upon resolution, the infection can occur again at a later date. In other cases, surgical removal of the infected womb along with the ovaries might be needed.

4. Outdoor supervision
Female dogs release pheromones in their urine, which can be detected by males from a long distance. Male dogs are always eager to mate, so keep your female dog away from them if you do not want her to get pregnant.
