【CityU VMC Vet Tips – How to calm your pet during thunderstorm?】

Loud noise can be frightening to our flurry friends. Imagine the scenarios of a thunderstorm, it usually comes after lightning. This sudden noise and lightening can be very startling to pets.

Not every dog is bothered by thunder, if you see your dog has behaviors like shivering, whimpering, hiding and constant movement, he/she is likely feeling frightened by the situation. For cats, they typically show their fear by hiding in closets or under furniture until the storm passes.

Tips to calm your pet

1. You must stay calm
You must stay calm and relaxed. If you are also feeling nervous during a storm, your pet will follow.
2. Lead them to a safe place
Create a safe place for your pet to stay, do not punish them just because they feel nervous. If your dog prefers his crate, try covering the crate with a blanket until the storm passes.
3. Provide Background Noise
Turn on TV, calming music or simply play some white noise.
4. Let them play with their favorite toys
You can try to distract your pet from the noise by diverting their attention with toys – throwing a ball for example.
5. Discuss with your vet
Your vet can give you some professional advice as in how to calm your pet. Especially when you find your pet’s anxiety during thunderstorm is severe. Your vet may advice you with alternative remedies to help your pet feel calmer.
