【VMC Vets Tips | Pet Longevity】

It is devastating to say goodbye to our beloved pets, and we all want to spend as much quality time as possible with them. Keeping your pet healthy is essential and will ensure you spend many happy years together. However, there are some habits that can shorten a dog’s life. Let’s check out what to avoid in keeping our dogs healthy!

What shorten a pet’s life?

1) Obesity: Obese dogs are more likely to die young, so do not overfeed your dog if you want to prevent this. Some reports indicate that obesity can lead to several health issues. For example, joint problems, diabetes, and cancer.

2) Neglecting dental care: Gum disease can affect your dog’s overall health and quality of life. A build-up of oral bacteria can ultimately lead to all sorts of health problems, including heart valve problems, infections within the kidneys, etc.

3) Skipping annual checkup: Bringing your pet to the vet for annual check up is the best way of catching diseases early and making sure that health problems do not become chronic.

4) Lack of exercise: Regular exercising boosts the immune system, increases cardiac strength, and provides mental stimulation. Not being in the habit of exercising your dog daily can mean that your dog is in a greater risk of developing health issues.

5) Feeding unhealthy table scraps: There are some foods that you should never feed your pet. For example, the calories in cheese can be the equivalent of a human eating a few chocolate bars. Also, the fat and salt content in a lot of food we eat is far too high for pets.

Health tips for older pet

There are several things we can do to introduce healthy lifestyle habits to our dogs, even when they are getting senior. For example, make sure they have a balanced diet containing high quality ingredients in appropriate amounts to maintain a proper weight. Besides, regular exercising, meeting your vet for annual checkup, maintaining good oral health, etc are essential to keep your senior pet healthy and help them age gracefully.
