CityU VMC Vet Tips Friday! | Traditional Chinese New Year Foods That Are Toxic to Cats and Dogs (2)

Today, we will continue to tell you what food you should not let your pets to get hold of during Chinese New Year. You must continue reading lest your New Year’s celebrations turning into tragic accidents.

1. Sunflower seeds and watermelon seeds: Watermelon and sunflower seeds are the most common snacks that we include in our New Year candy box. Both seeds when consumed in excess might cause vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases intestinal obstruction can be seen. As these seeds can be salted as well, excessive ingestion can result in thirst, excessive urination, muscle tremors, seizure or even death.

2. Chocolates: Chocolates contain a substance called methylxanthines which when ingested can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, overexcitement, panting, tremors, abnormal heart rhythms, seizures or even death! The amount of methylxanthines present depends on the chocolate type, in general the more bitter it is the more toxic it could be. Baking chocolate tends to contain much higher methylxanthines than the other types. Ingestion of any kind of chocolate requires immediate emergency veterinary attentions.

3. Candies: Candies are very high in sugar, which are fuels for gut bacteria fermentation. Ingestion therefore can lead to gastrointestinal upsets and flatulence.

Finally, we wish you and your furry kids good health and happiness year after year!
